Adventures with running Xfce along with Fedora 15 Gnome 3 Part 2

I had finished customizing Xfce the way I wanted it and promised to stick to Xfce and forget about Gnome 3 for awhile on my Fedora 15-powered Asus EEEPC 1000H. 

Xfce Disaster and Yum uninstall

I launched Shutter and KeepNote to jot down details for article.  I brought up Xfce's dialog boxes and started to take screenshots when the windows froze.  I tried to move the window around and switch to KeepNote, but the window just created ghosts of itself.  I tried to access the Terminal but to no avail.  After a few minutes of trying to kill applications, I did the unthinkable in Linux - I used the power off button. 

This had never happened to Gnome 3 on the Fedora 15 so I was sure it wasn't Fedora.  It wasn't any display issues either since the EEEPC 1000H had survived through installs of openSUSE 12.1 KDE and Mandriva 2011.2 ROSA.  I booted Xfce one more time but again, it crashed.  For all I know, Shutter, my screen-capture application didn't work well with Xfce.  It happened two more times.  It was time to get rid of Xfce, vowing never to try the environment again.

I used the Terminal to remove Xfce using the command yum groupuninstall xfce.  I trusted YUM to remove the 37 packages properly.  I knew Xfce shared libraries with Gnome.  What I didn't know was that Yum would prompt the removal of Gnome packages during the uninstallation of Xfce.  I agreed to have them removed, thinking that they were Gnome packages that were added during the installation of Xfce.  This was my second mistake. 

YUM did its job perfectly and removed all the Xfce packages.

After erasing the Xfce packages, I did a bit of work, surprisingly happy to be back with Fedora 15 Gnome 3.  A reboot however, proved that the uninstallation of Xfce was unsuccessful.  Fedora 15 stopped working on the splash screen.  It took a trip to the terminal to fix the problems that Xfce's removal had caused. 

Honestly, I didn't miss Xfce.

Unsatisfied and remembering my productivity issues with Gnome 3, I backed up my files and went through a clean installation of openSUSE 12.1.
