FrameMaker 10 Crash Course: Working with Imported Word Documents

Posted on 23:35 by Unknown
When a user imports a Word document in FrameMaker 10, the option to either Import by Reference or Copy Into Document is presented.  By default, FrameMaker selects Import by Reference so the original source can be edited by its native application (i.e. Microsoft Word 2007).

To import a Word document directly into FrameMaker 10:
1. Use the Select Tool to move the cursor to where the document text is to be imported into.
2. Click File, then Import.  Click File.
3. Locate the Word document and select Copy into Document before clicking Import.
4. Select Microsoft Word or Microsoft Word 2007.  Click Convert.

5. Select formatting options as appropriate then click Import.

If Import by Reference is used, the text imported cannot be edited in the FrameMaker document window and is treated as Text Inset.

Text Inset is treated as one block of text and cannot be edited in FrameMaker.

To edit text imported by reference within FrameMaker 10, the block of text needs to be converted to plain text.
1. Double-click on the block of text.
2. On the Text Inset Properties, click Convert.
Text Inset Properties
3. Select either Selected Text Inset or All Text Insets.  Click Convert.
Converted Inset text can now be edited in the document window.

Inset text converted to text retains all imported formatted properties from the Word document though the text loses connection to the Source file.
