Resolving Touchpad issues in openSUSE 12.1 with the Synaptiks Package

The openSUSE forums have reported numerous button and tapping issues with openSUSE 12.1.  Symptoms also include a working touchpad but nonfunctional buttons (which I personally experienced with the Asus EEEPC 1000H).  This was a surprise because earlier openSUSE releases (e.g. openSUSE 10, openSUSE 11.1-4) didn't have touchpad problems.  Observant users will also notice that after a fresh install, touchpad settings do not display under Input Devices (Personal Settings) in 12.1 whereas touchpad settings were present in 11.4 under Keyboard and Mouse.

Most of the issues (including nonfunctional buttons) can be resolved by installing the synaptiks package.  After installing the package, visit Input Devices and click on the touchpad option.  Switch to the tapping tab and configure the right-click and left-click buttons as needed.  OpenSUSE 12.1 the use of two-finger tapping on the Asus EEEPC 1000H.

Installing the synaptiks package adds touchpad configuration to openSUSE 12.1.

Switch on the tapping functionality on the tapping tab.
