Exploring the Activity Manager in openSUSE 12.1 Part 2

Posted on 17:38 by Unknown
Grid Desktop Activity, Previewer, Notes and Icon widgets

The Grid Desktop Activity works by organizing the desktop space as grids.  Arranging icons and KDE "Previewers" only involves dragging file types to the desktop.

Dragging PDFs and image files creates Previewer boxes that are collapsible and provide thumbnails for the file.  As users add numerous PDF or image files to a Previewer box, a scroll bar appears.  Double-clicking a thumbnail opens a quick viewing window that appears on top of all open windows.  Users can choose to either use this quick viewing window or open the thumbnail using the default application (Gwenview for images and Adobe Reader/Okular for PDFs).

Dragging images to the desktop triggers options for a Previewer Widget, Picture Frame, or Icon.

Clicking the thumbnail in the Previewer triggers a quick preview.  Double-clicking opens the default application.

PDFs are previewed using Okular.

Users can resize Previewers by holding the mouse pointer over the upper-left hand corner where a black indicator will appear.  Previewers and all items added to the desktop snap automatically to the desktop grid.  Clicking on the X closes the Previewer.

A small almost invisible box on the upper-right hand corner is used to resize the Previewer widget.

Images dragged to the desktop also have the option to create a Picture Frame - a widget that allows users to scroll through a set of images inside a selected folder.

The default desktop activity (Desktop Icons), allows users to copy, create links (i.e. shortcuts) and move files to the desktop.  In the Grid Activity, dragging files that are neither images nor PDFs, such as LibreOffice or OpenOffice files, creates a desktop icon.  Text files dragged to the grid has options to create an icon or create a sticky Note.

Widgets are aligned to a grid.

Text files can appear as either a Note or a txt icon

Picture Activity

The Picture Activity template automatically posts one Desktop View folder on the desktop and a Picture Frame widget.  Picture Frame widgets are immensely entertaining - they can be configured to display images found on a specified folder.  Controls on the Picture Frame scrolls through the images.

Options when dragging files to the desktop are similar to the Grid Desktop Activity.
