opensuse 12.1 Essentials: DropBox

Posted on 01:53 by Unknown
Dropbox, a popular cloud storage service provides a utility to synchronize folders to terminals and machines that are online.  Linux users who visit Dropbox.com might be surprised that there isn't an RPM download specifically for openSUSE.  However, a visit to the openSUSE Build Services will merit a 1-Click Install for the Dropbox utility.

Dropbox provides installation files for Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian distributions.

Users can manually download the dropbox RPM specifically for openSUSE 12.1 from the online repository.
After downloading and running the RPM, users will undergo the same set up process as in Windows and Mac.  Once the users select a service and specify a Dropbox folder, the Dropbox icon will appear on the System Tray.

The 1-click install for Dropbox is installed like any utility and Yast downloads any needed dependencies.

Dropbox will initially appear with the globe icon on the KDE Menu but will later sport the familiar Dropbox icon once setup.

The 1-click install package is only a setup package - users would still have to download Dropbox's proprietary daemon as in Mac OS X and Windows.

Dropbox will offer to place the synced folder on the User folder, but this can be changed to a specified location such as Downloads.

Users may want to uncheck the Start Dropbox on system startup if they don't need Dropbox on boot.
