Although Microsoft's revamped Hotmail service, Outlook.com and the cross-platform Opera 12 browser seems like an odd combination, it seems like the new service doesn't work well on Opera. Users can log in but all the controls will not work. Opening e-mail, clicking the New button, or attempting to access other services via the drop-down panel won't work. In short, it's an unresponsive page. Refreshing or changing Opera settings for browsing don't make any difference either. This is a disappointing turn of events for Opera, considering that buggy Mozilla Firefox 13 handles Outlook.com fine (and Microsoft kindly even recommends upgrading Google Chrome if you're not an IE9 user).
Outlook.com in Opera - Nonfunctional
Concerned that this may be just a bug on the Windows release of Opera 12, I ran an updated Opera 12.01 on my Ubuntu and Mageia machines and experienced the same distressing problem with Outlook.com on Opera.
Outlook.com in Opera installed on Mageia 2 - Nonfunctional
Outlook.com may not have garnered as many users as advertised by industry watchers, but there will always be a market for dependable and functional e-mail services. Outlook.com may even undergo a surge in usage come October when Windows 8 is released. With Microsoft busy with their latest operating system, I truly doubt that they would add compatibility controls for Outlook.com to support browsers such as Opera (Outlook.com works fine even with vanilla-flavored Chromium browser). Hopefully, Opera developers can work quickly to get Outlook.com working on this fairly functional and admirable browser.
